Red Barnacles - free form crochet

Yes, I know I have been slack in my blogging for the last couple of months, but I haven't been slack in my making. I am making a conscious effort to catch up on my blogging at the moment. So here is my "Red Barnacles".

There are about 15 different reds, and well over 200 'barnacles'. They are all done in SC (single crochet), with various sizes. No pattern was followed, I made them up as I went. For about 3 months there was always a ball of red yarn and a crochet hook in my handbag! I really love the texture this creates.

This is currently hanging in the ICAN@7 gallery. I'm pretty sure it will end up in my lounge room when it's finished - unless, someone likes this more than me (is that really possible?!).

  1. This is beautiful! I know you mentioned it's a sc but I can't seem to find any information online about how to make the pod shape. I imagine it requires a sequence of adding and dropping stitches? any tips? *newbie

  2. I start this with basically a magic ring (but I don't pull it tight): I wrap the yarn around my finger around 3-4 times, then crochet my sc all around, about 12-24 st, (and don't pull the thread tight at the end). Then I just work in the round, adding 3-6 stitches per round for 2-4 rounds (depending on the shape I'm after. Then work 2-4 rounds straight (no inc or dec). Then decrease 3-5 stitches per round, again depending on the shape I'm after. Play around with it for a while until you find the shape you like. Each one took about 15-20min to make. Have fun!

  3. This is gorgeous! I will have to try something like this... I love the red, but I imagine it could also look great in shades of grey and beige (for the less adventurous). Did you always use the same kind of yarn for all of them?

    1. It is a total mix of yarns - Acrylic, wool, alpaca. for about 3 months I always had a ball of red yarn in my handbag and a crochet hook! I also had a little ziplock / sandwich bag with a sample of the yarns I already had. When I ran out of one yarn, I went to the nearest haberdashery shop and got another ball of red yarn, that was not the same as what I already had. I think I ended up with 15 different reds. I have another in the pipeline that is blues and greens, different style...watch this space!

  4. Beautiful - and thank you for the "pattern" in the comments.
I am planning on making a small bath mat for my camper - and the barnacles match the theme perfectly. Can I ask you how you put them all together afterwards? Sewed together or glued to the frame?
